Charity Care Policy
Our Commitment to Low Income Uninsured Patients
Novato Community Hospital and the affiliates of Sutter Health are committed to better serving our communities by working together to identify and adopt best practices that benefit our patients, the community and our employees.
Novato Community Hospital has always provided a comprehensive Financial Assistance program to assist patients in a compassionate manner. In February 2004, Sutter Health and their affiliates enhanced this assistance by expanding our financial assistance, charity care and payment collection practices. In March 2006, Sutter Health and their affiliates further expanded our assistance to low income and uninsured by providing substantial discounts on total charges prior to billing the patient. In January 2007, additional changes were made in the areas of patient information and assistance in payment of a hospital claim.
Or revised policies allow fair discounts and catastrophic protection to low income or uninsured patients and ensure consistent and fair collection practices. We are further committed to ensuring a financially sound organization through responsible care of the resources entrusted to us, so that we continue to provide outstanding medical care with the latest advances and a highly skilled work force.
The Sutter Health Charity, Low Income and Uninsured Program is designed to:
- Provide full charity care to low income or uninsured patients earning less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Income Guideline (FPIG).
- Provide catastrophic protection to low income or uninsured patients by limiting their payment liability to between 10% and 30% of their annual household income.
- Provide extended payment plans with no interest charges to our low income and uninsured patients.
- Assist patients in applying for Medi-Cal, CMSP or Healthy Families.
Our charity care policy is limited to hospital charges and does not include physician, anesthesiologist or professional charges. In addition, charity care is not offered for cosmetic, elective, experimental or other treatments and all hospital services must be ordered by a physician.
NCH Offers substantial discounts to Uninsured Patients.
