MGH/NCH Contribute $79.4 Million In 2005 Community Benefits



GREENBRAE – Marin General Hospital and Novato Community Hospital contributed a combined $79,495,000 in support of 110 community programs and services that benefited 49,087 people in 2005.

The majority of this spending was for charity care and un-reimbursed care.

MGH provided $66.9 million (27 percent of net patient revenues) in support of 89 community programs/services that benefited 42,729 people.

The unpaid cost for Medicare was $37.9 million, Medi-Cal was $15.1 million, and $10.7 million for Medically Indigent Adults (MIA). Traditional charity care amounted to another $2.0 million.

NCH provided $12.5 million (19 percent of net patient revenues) in support of 21 community programs/services that benefited 6,358 people.

The unpaid cost of Medicare was $8.9 million, Medi-Cal was $2.5 million; and $726,000 for MIA. Traditional charity care was $236,000.

Both hospitals sponsored a variety of programs and services in 2005, including financial contributions and in-kind donations of staff services to the Healthy Marin Partnership, free and low cost public education seminars, and support groups for breast and prostate cancer patients. MGH also provided a rent subsidy to the Marin Community Clinic, located on the Greenbrae campus.

The Sutter Health system last year assumed $929 million in costs related to providing care and services for the poor and underserved and benefits for the broader community.
